In order to solve the biggest issues facing the future of Miami, we have to bring people together.

An important part of our work at The Miami Foundation involves investing in the effectiveness and future sustainability of our local Miami nonprofits.

We recognize that nonprofits need more than just financial grants. Our goal is to help our local organizations and their leaders develop competencies and skills that can make them more effective and sustainable.

Capacity building takes many forms, and the Foundation has spent intensive time listening to our nonprofit partners about their needs and evaluating the most effective ways to support them. In the first half of 2022 alone we’ve:

  • Engaged in over 350 office hours and feedback sessions with grant program applicants
  • Hosted 3 grant program open calls related to a variety of issue areas and received 619 applications
  • Launched a Community Advisory Council to counsel Foundation leadership on nonprofit needs
  • Offered a capacity building survey to nonprofit CEOs

After listening, we spent time evaluating past capacity building efforts, considering new options, and unpacking what we heard from these sessions:

  • The highest, greatest need for nonprofits is fund development support – 73% of Miami nonprofits surveyed said that was their #1 greatest need.
  • Need for multi-year, reliable funding to support the creation of innovative solutions
  • Miami nonprofits only raise 9% of the budgets from individual donors – huge untapped opportunity.

The Miami Foundation is standing with our partner, The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation, to make additional investments in capacity building.  Outlined below, learn more about our current strategies and how you can get the financial resources and training your organization needs.
