Arts Access Miami  aims to bring the transformational power of arts and music education to all youth. At The Miami Foundation, our goal is to build a Greater Miami where everyone can thrive, and we know that access to arts is vital to achieving that vision. When young people are able to engage in and connect with the arts, their ability to problem solve, open their minds to new ideas, and find meaning and purpose grows.

The Catalyst Grant is a grant program that aims to close gaps in arts education across our region, as highlighted from data in artlook® Miami. Through this grant, we want to foster stronger arts partnerships within the Miami-Dade County Public Schools ecosystem.

 

Catalyst Grants are multi-year grants (up to $20,000 distributed over two years) for arts education programs, initiatives, and organizations in Miami-Dade. Grant funds are intended to address opportunities for strengthened arts partnerships between nonprofit organizations and Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

 

In addition to the grant funds, The Miami Foundation will work closely with each selected grant partner throughout the two-year period to provide capacity-building and opportunities for network-building, collaboration, and learning.

Focus Areas

We want to prioritize real-time needs in arts access that have been identified through our artlook® Miami data. For this grant cycle, we will prioritize organizations focused on:

      • Artist residencies and professional development | Our artlook data reveals that there is a need for more partnerships that provide artist residencies and arts education-centered professional development for teachers.  
      • Dance & Theatre | While there is more access to visual arts and music, there is less access to dance and theatre.  
      • School Needs | artlook® Miami works with schools to collect data about needs for arts education partnerships and programs.  We will welcome applications that reference a discovery from the artlook Miami data that is not highlighted above that has informed their proposed programming.

 

 

(NOTE: While organizations may not have the time to analyze the artlook data, we encourage applicants to focus on how their project addresses a clear need within M-DCPS. Grant Amount:

$20,000 distributed over a two-year cycle

        • To ensure ongoing alignment and optimal use of funds, The Miami Foundation will review each grantees’ progress and address any areas of potential improvement prior to confirming the continuation of funding for the second year.

 

Grant Period:
        • Year 1: August 2024 – June 2025
        • Year 2: July 2025 – June 2026

 

Funding Note:

We understand that creating, building, and launching an arts education program requires the appropriate resources. To that end, this grant is not intended to build a full-scale program, but rather as general operating support to seed a component of, scale an existing program, fund an initiative within, or to foster a new relationship with a school or partner. Our hope is that this funding will help our grant partners foster sustainable relationships that increase access to arts education.

To be eligible for a Catalyst Grant, you must:

Be a IRS 501©(3) public charity serving Miami-Dade County young people through the arts

(Note: IRS 501(c)(3) public charity fiscal sponsors are also eligible to apply)

☐ Have a clear idea for how this grant will catalyze your work further within M-DCPS

☐ Orient toward collaborations and partnerships: While funds will be directed to individual organizations, our goal is to fund organizations that collaborate and partner with others.

☐ Have a 2024 operating budget of under $750,000

☐ Intend to use the funding for an arts education program in partnership with an M-DCPS school.

☐ Have a record of consistent, ongoing participation opportunities for youth through the arts

☐ Have a focus on equity, with staff and board being representative of the communities served.

Funding Priorities

In addition to our eligibility requirements, we will prioritize funding organizations that:

        • Focus on access to arts education. We will support projects that not only engage youth in the arts, but also demonstrate a clear strategy to increase their access to these opportunities.
        • Advance equity. We will prioritize organizations working with communities that face marginalization based on race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, mixed-abilities, or other lines of difference. 
        • Collaborate. We will prioritize organizations that can link their programmatic success to collaboration with a community, school, or partner organization.
        • Use data as a guide. We will prioritize projects that are guided and informed by data directly from artlook Miami. 
        • Are grassroots organizations. We will prioritize organizations with budgets under $750,000 annually and that may lack the resources to navigate the complexities of school partnerships effectively.

Applicants should apply through The Foundation’s Submittable platform. Sign in with an existing Submittable account or create a free account by providing a name and email address. Each organization may only submit one proposal.

Can I submit more than one application for a Grant?

No. Organizations may only submit up to one application for consideration.

I am a national organization with a local chapter, can I apply? Yes, if your organization has an existing local presence in Miami-Dade County, and includes consistent programming and a dedicated, staff member.

 

 

I’ve received a Music Access Fund mini grant in the past; can I apply again?

Yes! Organizations who received a mini grant in 2021, 2022, or 2023 are eligible to apply.

 

 

What are some examples of how funds can be used?

Awards in this category are intended to be flexible funds to help catalyze or strengthen partnerships between arts education nonprofits and M-DCPS Schools. Some examples of what this might look like are included below, however please note that applicants are not limited to these:

      • Increasing program frequency (e.g., from two days weekly to three days weekly)
      • Hiring more teaching artists/mentors
      • Purchasing needed equipment or software for your program or for your organizational success
      • Supplementing organization salaries
      • Scaling an existing in-school program

 

 

I’m a teaching artist who wants to partner with a school, can I apply?

Teaching and individual artists can apply if working with a 501c3 as a fiscal agent.

 

 

What will the reporting requirement be like?

Expectations consist of a written narrative report at the culmination of the first year of funding and at the end of the two-year grant period.

 

 

What are the program participation expectations with The Foundation and other grantees during the grant period?

The Miami Foundation is more than a funding source; we are partners in change. In addition to the granted funds, we will work closely with each selected grant recipient throughout the grant period to provide guidance, additional resources, and facilitate opportunities for meaningful collaboration and growth.

 

 

What does it mean to have an existing relationship with a M-DCPS school?

We characterize this relationship as active engagement and dialogue between a nonprofit arts education organization and a M-DCPS school. This can include: ongoing conversations about potential collaborations, and formal or informal agreements expressing a desire or mutual interest in establishing a partnership. *We encourage applicants that have not initiated contact with a school (but do share a mutual interest in developing a partnership or program) to connect with The Miami Foundation staff via office hours and attend one of the webinars.

 

 

Can I use data found from another source outside of artlook® Miami?

While other sources of data are welcomed, all applications must also reference findings from artlook® Miami.
